Republic Settles Contract in last hour!
Following intense, and sometimes tense negotiations with Republic
management, USW negotiators reached a tenative agreement on August 16th
just hours before the contract expired.  Steelworkers from Republics Gary plant
were preparing to join their brothers and sisters in Ohio and New York on the
picket line if necessary when the news of the agreement broke.  Special thanks to
District 7 Sub 5 Director Mike Millsap,  USW Local 2003 Vice President Dario
Llano, Coordinator Mike Millsap, Jr. and Steve Millsap Chairman of the Gary plant
Grievance Committee for their hard work and determination.   
Informational
meetings are scheduled in Gary on September 10th at 1:30 and 3:30 at
McBride Hall

Negotiations begin at Amrox / MII
USW Local 2003-10/11, AMROX  /  MII have begun negotiations for a master
contract with their sister plant in Allenport, PA.  Several sessions in Pittsburgh
and Cleveland have been attended by Tammy Chesney (USW Local 2003-10
MII), Dave Clark (USW Local 2003-10 MII), and Bob Fritz (USW Local 2003-11
AMROX).  Negotiations with company management is ongoing.  The current
contract expires July 31, 2007.

Early Negotiations begin at Republic
With an expiration date of August 16, negotiations began in earnest in May/2007
for a new master contract covering all Republic locations in Indiana, Pennsylvania,
and Ohio.  USW Local 2003-00 Unit Chairman and LU Vice President Dario
"Chief" Llano reports solid progress in language that covers seniority, lines of
progression, and local issues.  Chief is very optimistic that a solid economic
package will follow.

USW Local 2003 Members Complete Education Scholarships
Summer educational programs at the University of Illinois in Champaign were
completed by Gloria Mitchell (USW Local 2003-23 Rescoe), Mike Wheeler (USW
Local 2003-16 Chrome Deposit), Joeavanie Perez (USW Local 2003-35
American Steel Foundries), and Carl Higgason (USW Local 2003-19 Cargill
Steel)  Each successfully completed the scholarship program at the university.  
Scholarships for these educational programs in labor studies are available for
any member of Local 2003 who shows interest in the Union, and the labor
movement.  Contact President Carlos Luna if you are interested in participating
next summer!

Cargill Steel Gains with New Contract
The negotiations were tough, and went down to the wire.  But the workers at
Cargill Steel prevailed.  The new contract provides pay increases, pension
benefit increases, and caps increases in health care costs to our members.  
USW Local 2003-19 members Carl Higgason and Ron Magruder worked hard to
make this contract happen.  Thanks to the solidarity and assistance of the Local
Union President and Co-ordinator.

New Contract at Silgan Container
After weeks of negotiations, a new contract has been settled at Silgan Container,
following overwhelming ratification of the membership.  Helping negotiate the
contract was Lewis Fuqua, Unit Chairman of USW Local 2003-24.  Silgan
workers held the line on retiree health insurance, current negotiated pensions,
and gained pay increases

Effort to change meeting time defeated!
At the regular meeting held on January 18, 2007 the proposal to change the
meeting time in the LU by-laws came to a vote following three consecutive months
of being read before the membership.  The measure did not get the support of at
least 2/3 of the membership, and was defeated.

New T-shirts are in!
New USW Local 2003 t-shirts have arrived.  If you haven't already, stop by the
Union Hall to get yours.  The cost per shirt is only $9.50.

Web Site updated!
After nearly three years, the local Union website has been updated! Check back
for more updates soon.  One of the exciting new features of the web site is the
Members Market.  The Members Market is a forum where our members can post
items for sale or trade.  Members also can advertise for free any businesses they

American Steel Foundries LOCKED OUT!
After rejecting the companies "last and final offer", our members at ASF reported
to work on October 1, 2006 to find they had been locked out by management.  
After a week of intense bargaining, solidarity on the picket line, not to mention
some very ugly weather our members returned to work with a better deal than
most could have hoped.  Congratulations to the workers at ASF for standing
strong!  A special thank you to the members of Local 2003 who helped on the
picket line.

First annual picnic held October 1!
The first annual picnic for Local 2003 was held on October 1st.  The kids enjoyed
the clown, face painting, moon walk and slide.  All enjoyed the great food, DJ
entertainment, bingo, horseshoes, and the incredible warm weather.  The picnic
was enjoyed by over 400 members and their families.  A special thank you to all
the members of the Executive Board who worked hard to make it a sucess.

Proposed amendment to Local 2003 by-laws
At the regular meeting held on November 16, 2006 a change in the local by-laws
was proposed.  The proposed change is to change the time of the regular monthly
meeting from 4:30 PM to 3:45 PM.  The proposed change will again be read at
the regular monthly meeting on December 21, 2006 and will then be voted on at
the regular monthly meeting on January 18, 2007.

New Union T-shirts will be available soon!
Due to demand, more t-shirts have been ordered.  The new shirts feature the new
USW logo on the front, and the Jack Daniels union design on the back, and will
be available in black only.  They will be available for sale to interested members
at cost (around $8 - $10)
